The long tradition of cultural travel peaked during the era of 'The Grand Tour'. Travellers from all over Europe and beyond flocked to Italy to view the monuments of antiquity and to discover with excitement the defining moments in the evolution of architecture, painting and the decorative arts. Many visitors had the advantage of relying on the knowledge of a 'Cicerone' who was a cultivated, learned and, if lucky, companionable guide.
The CICERONI Team includes Chloe Pepper who is responsible for tour operations and marketing, Stephen Brook who is responsible for finance and administration and James Hill, who is our resident Tour Manager in Italy with responsibility also for the Balkans and North America. Tom Duncan, CICERONI's founder, leads tours regularly and continues to develop new tours so that our clients are not without fresh and exciting places to visit each year.
Our company name, CICERONI, is the Italian word for a group of eighteenth century 'Grand Tour' guides. We create and conduct our tours in the relaxed and informative manner of the Grand Tour with a particular accent on private visits. We use comfortable hotels in enviable country and city locations while good food and wine are an important part of our sense of hospitality.
Some of the questions we are frequently asked are set out below. If you have a query not answered below please call or email us - we are here to answer your questions. The typical CICERONI Traveller is someone who has a lively and intelligent curiosity about what we shall see, someone who seeks knowledge of the detailed history of the sites and collections concerned.
