Piedmont is known to most people as the land of wine and fine food, yet little mention is made of its diverse and beautiful landscape. This part of Italy is largely untouched by tourism and is in many ways the true Italy, rooted in agriculture and fiercely proud of its culinary heritage. In the autumn, food festivals take place nearly every weekend, celebrating the regional produce of local farmers and wine-makers.
Glamorous and enchanting, Portofino is old-school, sophisticated Italy at its best. Discovered in the 1950s, this multi-coloured little fishing harbour was soon a favourite with the likes of Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Ernest Hemingway, who all fell under its spell. Sixty years later, Portofino still holds her charm and remains pretty much unchanged, although the fishermen's cottages are more likely to house Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana.
Corbusier described the rose pink Dolomites as the 'best architectural masterpiece in the world'. Hemingway used to drive his open top Buick from Venice to Cortina, arriving with his beard covered in icicles just in time for an aperitivo at the legendary Hotel de la Poste. Yet, despite these famous visitors, skiing in Italy is thankfully still fairly unknown compared to Switzerland, Austria and France.
